The Countertenor

With an extraordinarily broad vocal range and natural fluency in many musical styles, Terry Barber has been featured on some of the world’s most storied stages and worked with many of the music industry’s most prestigious figures — a voting member of the Grammy Awards whose voice has appeared on many major record labels.

He is known for his ability as an entertainer, embracing audiences with his warm character and vocal prowess which spans from ethereal to powerfully moving. A past member of the multiple Grammy-winning group Chanticleer, he has been a soloist at many of the world’s best venues — from the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher (where he performed with the NY Philharmonic) and Alice Tully Hall, to London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Moscow’s Svetlanov Hall, to name just a few.

He can be heard on recordings alongside artists from Madonna, Jewel, Chaka Khan and Cyndi Lauper to the London Philharmonic. Terry’s recent album and tour, the music of Freddie Mercury was considered for 8 Grammy nominations.

His Christmas Presence recording was released in late 2015. It was produced by seventeen-time Grammy-winning “classical producer of the year” Steven Epstein — who has produced albums for Wynton Marsalis, Plácido Domingo, Bobby McFerrin, Yo-Yo Ma and Idina Menzel — and includes the radio-charting hit “Christmas Once More,” co-written by Gene Scheer and Terry Barber. The album also features Terry in a duet version of the song, with opera star Denyce Graves who has sung at the Metropolitan Opera opposite Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti.

Terry’s most popular recorded song, with hundreds of thousands of streams, is an original he wrote about the feeling we all have — “When the World Falls Apart.”

Since 2012 the focus of Terry’s career has been hundreds of international solo tour performances. The first and only countertenor ever booked in the “Live on Stage” network, he was a favorite with almost sixty bookings for both concerts and educational outreach throughout the USA in a single season.

“He took our audience by the hand and helped them connect with the art — laughs, tears, and a real connection with this genuine artist. His concert was among our all-time favorites.”

Artists for a Cause

In 2009, Terry founded Artists for a Cause Inc., a non-profit that helps visual and performing artists use their talent for community improvement. His own work with the organization includes the “A Sacred Journey” tour — a history of western sacred music that has given over fifty performances and raised thousands of dollars for community programs.

Through “Classical for Schools,” a performance-lecture that challenges students’ notions of what is possible with the human voice, his work will reach more than 10,000 students this year across the USA and Canada. His tours were selected by the Department of Culture, and approved by the Senate, to represent the state of Florida on its touring roster.
